The Philippines, through its Civil Aviation Authority, was one of over a hundred delegates at the Third International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) that ran from 20-24 November 2023 in Dubai, UAE.

The convention presented opportunities for ICAO Member States to firm up their collective commitments to boost the global aviation’s transition towards Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF), and other cleaner energy sources.

This year, ICAO conducted outreach activities and consultations to collect views among States and stakeholders regarding their expectations with a global framework (e.g. building block 1 – policy and planning; building block 2 – regulatory framework, building block 3 – implementation support, and block 4- financing mechanism) that would facilitate the scale up in the development, production and deployment of aviation cleaner energies.

The five-day Conference aimed to send a strong message to the international community on the sector’s readiness in achieving the global collective aspirational Vision to reduce CO2 emissions in international aviation by 5% in 2030.

As the Philippines’ national civil aviation authority, CAAP has continuously advocated for sustainability in its operations. Having been elected as the Vice Chair for the 58th Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation Asia and Pacific Regions (DGCA) last 16 October 2023, the Philippines, is set to host the 59th DGCA event which will be held in Cebu next year. Sustainability will be one of the 59th DGCA’s central themes, making topics such as aviation decarbonization a key priority.
