In a great move for regional connectivity, representatives from civil aviation authorities of South East Asian (SEA) nations and EU, together with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), met to discuss a collaboration effort aimed at improving safe and sustainable air transport between the two regions.
On 25 April 2024, the EU-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package (SCOPE) Aviation Partnership Project (APP) meeting was held at Hilton Manila in Pasay City facilitated by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The SCOPE APP meeting provided a valuable platform for member states to directly address the EU and highlight areas where they’d like additional support. The Philippines, for example, expressed gratitude for the EU’s current assistance and requested further collaboration in training and manpower development.
This joint effort goes beyond this single gathering, which is built on the strong foundation laid by the 21st Cooperative Development of Operational Safety and Continuing Airworthiness Programme South East Asia (COSCAP-SEA) Steering Committee Meeting held the previous day at the same venue. The COSCAP-SEA meeting saw member states finalize work plans for 2024-2025, focusing on enhancing civil aviation safety, sustainability, and resilience across ASEAN.
The high-level meetings were attended by CAAP Director General Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo, ICAO Asia and Pacific Office Regional Director Tao Ma, EASA EU-ASEAN SCOPE APP Project Manager David Waller, CAA Vietnam Director General Viengxay Singkham, CAA Thailand Director General Suttipong Kongpool, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Asia-Pacific Region Director Chris Carter, among others.
The collaborative spirit is alive and well between the SEA and EU, paving the way for an aviation sector with stronger connectivity and safer skies for the two regions.
